Schmeits Personal Philosphy
Schmeits Personal Philosophy
Technology should be a part of our education system for two specific reasons. First, technology is part of our daily lives and is now a part of every system in our nation. There is advanced technology in our agriculture, military, sales, there has even been a painting competition which was won by someone who submitted art that was done by a type of artificial intelligence (Metz, 2022). Every facet of our culture now has a highly involved tech side. Students need to be embracing technology in the education system so that when they leave the education system they are already knowledgeable in tech and different ways that new technology can help in the various facets of whatever career field they decide to go into.
The other reason that technology should be included in education is that technology can make learning more efficient. There are a few tools that were used often through my childhood that helped teachers give more information in an easier way, projectors and slideshows. Projectors connecting to computers to produce slideshows are a more efficient way to show students information than having to write everything down on a chalkboard. Not every teacher thinks that implementing new technology is beneficial, but in a recent study, Walan (2020) showed that science teachers who were asked to use more technology felt that it improved their lessons, motivated their students, and allowed them to provide more individualized instruction to their students. Also, Wu et al (2021) implemented a hybrid-style lesson plan (more technology mixed in with traditional instruction) and showed that the turn-in rate of homework, homework quality, and student acceptance of the teaching style all improved when compared with traditional style lessons.
Technology should absolutely be a huge part of the education system and we, as educators, should do everything possible to be pursuing all different types of technology. Some classes that focus on technology that I have had, like typing or movie editing, can have a very big effect on many types of jobs. In my current job, questions that were asked of me were what my typing speed is, my abilities with excel, and how comfortable I feel making slideshows and giving presentations to high ranking officers. Being able to answer those questions confidently in my interview, I believe, was a strong part of why I was able to get the job at all.
One example of how important keeping up with new technology in a job market is one of my favorite pastimes; fantasy football. Becoming a fantasy football analyst used to just be writing articles about fantasy football. Now, if you want to present fantasy football info to the public you need to write articles, tweet stats, create flashy graphics for instagram, have guests on your podcast, create apps about fantasy football, and be able to produce and act in videos where you discuss fantasy football. It would absolutely be a disservice to our students to not give them as many tools as possible to be able to compete in the future job markets.
While the bible doesn’t speak much to technology specifically, it seems obvious to me that the bible, and New Testament especially, would teach us to make the best use of technology as possible. To start with, the majority of the New Testament is made up of written letters to various churches from the disciples and religious leaders. They had important information and guidance to give to the churches while they were not physically with them, so they wrote that information down and sent a letter. There is no reason to think that if the religious leaders at the time had had access to emails, telephones, video chats, or an app, that they would not have taken full advantage of that technology to send bible studies and encouragement more efficiently to the churches in other towns. Another key point is the “Great Commission”, specifically Matthew 28:19-20, which states “19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. 20 And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” In order to carry out this command we need to be able to have access to, communicate with, and influence everywhere on Earth. We need planes and boats to be able to go to new places, we need phones and the ability to learn new languages to communicate with people. The command of the Great Commision isn’t to just tell people about God, but to also make disciples of them. In order to make disciples we need advanced communication and the ability to teach and study with everyone. The Apostles were also under the impression that they had to fulfill the great commissions commands quickly. They believed that they must share Christianity with as many people as possible before Jesus came back and ushered us to a paradise in a timely manner. Romans 13: 11-14 “11 And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. 14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.” Corinthians 7: 29 & 31 “ 29 … the time is short… 31 …For this world in its present form is passing away.” They absolutely would have jumped at the chance to extend their reach as far and fast as possible. The last point I’d like to make is that we need bibles, Christianity would not be what it is today without the invention of the printing press. The written bible is printed and handed out almost everywhere. Most recently, almost anyone who has access to the internet has the ability to read the word of God through bible apps on phones and computers.
My role as an educator, specifically in Physical Education, when it comes to technology is to show my students that even something that seems entirely non-technology based, like exercising or religion, can actually be greatly enhanced by adding a technological component. Apps can track your steps, your diet, and your workouts. They can provide you with more ideas and information about different exercises or games or where to join a local sports league. They can provide reminders and ways to share ideas with and encourage one another. Technology can do the same thing in your religious journey as well.
